Arrive in Lima, Peru’s vibrant coastal capital and the gateway to your Andean adventure. At Jorge Chávez International Airport, an Inside Peru Adventures representative will greet you and accompany you in a private transfer to your hotel in the lively district of Miraflores or Barranco.

Today is all about rest and gentle arrival. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to stroll along the oceanfront Malecón, watch paragliders float above the cliffs, or enjoy your first ceviche or pisco sour at one of Lima’s renowned restaurants.

In the evening, meet your IPA tour leader and fellow travelers for a Welcome Dinner. This first shared meal is an introduction not only to Peru’s world-famous gastronomy, but also to the warm, authentic spirit that will accompany you throughout your journey.

Destination: Ica

After a restful night and hotel breakfast, we will go to Ica for about 6 hours, with scenic stops along the way to stretch, enjoy views of the Pacific, and connect with your tour leader.

We will visit a traditional pisco distillery to learn how Peru’s iconic spirit is crafted—from grape harvest and fermentation to distillation. Of course, you’ll have the chance to taste different varieties and discover why pisco is at the heart of Peru’s national cocktail, the Pisco Sour. After that we will enjoy lunch, then we will go to our hotel, to take a small siesta or time to relax on our own, because we will go to the Huacachina desert for an exciting 4x4 dune buggy excursion. Ride over rolling sand dunes, and (season permitting) you may try sandboarding or simply soak in the surreal landscape and enjoy the sunset before returning to your hotel.

Start the day with an early breakfast, then we will go to Pisco in our private vehicle, to visit in a boat the Ballestas Islands, often nicknamed the “poor man’s Galápagos” for their remarkable biodiversity.

Cruise along dramatic rock formations, arches, and caves as you look for humboldt penguins, sea lions basking on the rocks, pelicans, boobies, cormorants and other seabirds, and starfish and rich marine life along the shores.

After the boat tour, we will return to Lima for about 4 hours, with scenic stops along the way to stretch, enjoy views of the Pacific.

After a restful night and hotel breakfast, begin your discovery of Lima’s rich colonial and pre-Columbian legacy. With your local guide, explore Colonial Lima: walk through elegant plazas, admire historic balconies and ornate churches, and visit the San Francisco Church and its catacombs—a fascinating window into Lima’s layered past and religious traditions.

At midday, you’ll stop at a carefully selected local restaurant where you are free to choose your lunch (meals not included today), a perfect chance to dive deeper into Lima’s culinary scene.

The afternoon and evening are at leisure. You may walk along the Miraflores cliffs at sunset, explore trendy Barranco with its street art and boutiques or simply enjoy an early night to recharge.

Destination: Paracas

Leave the city behind and follow the coastal highway south toward the desert oasis of Paracas. After breakfast, board your private vehicle and travel overland for about 5 hours, with scenic stops along the way to stretch, enjoy views of the Pacific, and connect with your tour leader.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant en route, then continue to Paracas, arriving in the early afternoon. This peaceful beachfront town will be your base for the next three nights as you explore the Nazca Lines, Ballestas Islands, and the surrounding desert dunes.

Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and join your tour leader for a short orientation walk, then enjoy free time to relax by the pool, walk along the bay, or watch the sunset over the Pacific.

Dinner is included this evening, either at the hotel or a nearby restaurant, depending on availability.

Today you’ll witness one of Peru’s most mysterious wonders: the Nazca Lines.

After breakfast, drive to Pisco Airport and board a small aircraft for a scenic overflight of the Nazca and Palpa geoglyphs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the air, you’ll see vast figures traced into the desert floor—monkeys, hummingbirds, spiders, geometric forms, and more—etched between 200 B.C. and 600 A.D. Their exact purpose remains an enigma, inspiring theories linked to astronomy, rituals, and ancient Andean cosmology.

After landing, continue to a nearby town fbor lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, visit the renowned Larco Museum, housed in an elegant 18th-century vice-regal mansion surrounded by gardens. Its collection offers a beautiful overview of Peru’s ancient civilizations, featuring gold and silver artifacts, ceramics, textiles, and its famous Erotic Gallery.

The evening is free for you to rest or dine independently. Your tour leader will be happy to recommend great places to eat or enjoy a quiet night before heading into the Andes.

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Lima, we’ll transfer you to the airport for your short domestic flight to Cusco—the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Upon landing, we won’t stay in the high altitude of the city just yet. Instead, we’ll head directly into the Sacred Valley, which sits at a more comfortable elevation and offers a gentler acclimatization to the Andes.

Your journey into Inca heartlands begins with two of the most extraordinary and photogenic sites in the region:

• Maras Salt Terraces: A surreal mosaic of over 3,000 shallow salt pools cascading down a mountainside, where local families still harvest salt using ancestral techniques. You'll learn about this sustainable practice and enjoy spectacular panoramic views.

• Moray Agricultural Lab: Marvel at this unique archaeological site consisting of concentric circular terraces. Believed to be a sophisticated Inca agricultural experimentation center, Moray showcases the empire’s mastery of microclimates and crop adaptation.

Just nearby lies Puca Pucara, a striking reddish ruin believed to have served as a military checkpoint and administrative center.

Continue to Q’enqo, a sacred space of carved stone used for rituals and offerings, featuring mysterious altars and underground chambers. Then stand before the breathtaking walls of Sacsayhuaman, an enormous Inca fortress known for its zigzag walls built with massive stones that fit together so precisely that not even a blade of grass fits between them.

Settle into your comfortable room, enjoy lunch, and receive a briefing on lodge activities and Amazon safety. In the late afternoon, you may join a short orientation walk or introductory activity, followed by dinner at the lodge.

Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) currently receives domestic flights only. All international travelers must first arrive in Lima (Jorge Chávez International Airport), clear immigration and customs, and then check in again for a separate domestic flight—even if flying with the same airline.

✈️ Good News: As part of your Peru Essence package, your round-trip domestic flights Lima ↔ Cusco are already included and booked on your behalf by Inside Peru Adventures.

We use trusted carriers such as LATAM, Avianca or SKY Airline. Keep in mind that high-altitude weather in Cusco can cause occasional delays, so flexibility and patience are helpful when flying to or from the Andes.

Even though this is an overnight tour to Machu Picchu by train, luggage restrictions apply due to the limited cargo capacity on the Expedition and Vistadome trains. Each traveler is allowed only one carry-on bag. For your comfort, we strongly recommend bringing only the essentials in a small backpack or duffel.

If you have additional luggage with you in Ollantaytambo, don’t worry—we’ll help you store your bags securely. You can leave them at your hotel or with Inside Peru Adventures’ safe storage facilities. We’ll collect your bags the morning of your tour and return them once you’re back from Machu Picchu. 
Make sure each bag is clearly labeled with your name or tag, especially if you’re traveling in a group, to ensure an easy return.

This itinerary combines cultural immersion with moderate physical activity. While most days involve light walking through archaeological sites, city streets, and train stations, Day 8 includes a full-day hike at high altitude, which requires a moderate fitness level.

Here’s a breakdown of physical activity throughout the trip:

• Days 1–7, 9,10: Easy to moderate walking through historical sites like Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, with plenty of breaks and transportation support.

• Day 8: You’ll embark on a scenic but physically demanding hike to either Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lagoon, or the 7 Lakes of Ausangate — reaching altitudes above 4,000 m (13,000 ft). The hike involves steep inclines and variable terrain.

We recommend preparing with light cardio or short hikes before your trip. Supportive shoes, hydration, and acclimatization are key. No trekking experience is required, but being in decent shape will enhance your enjoyment of the high-altitude hike.

Yes. Horse rentals are available at the trailhead and are managed by local community members. Horses can help you reach close to the summit but cannot go all the way up due to steep and narrow terrain. 

Note: Horse rental is not included in our tour package and must be arranged in person on-site.

• Day 1 – Arrival in Lima: Sea-level rest and recovery from your international flight. No major activities.
• Day 2 – Lima City Tour & Larco Museum: Light activity in Lima’s mild coastal climate. Great for cultural orientation and smooth entry.
• Day 3 – Arrival in Cusco & Light City Tour: You arrive at 3,400 m (11,150 ft) but only do a gentle walking tour in the afternoon to help your body adapt slowly.
• Day 4 – Sacred Valley Exploration (Pisaq & Moray): You descend to a lower altitude (~2,900 m / 9,500 ft), making this an ideal acclimatization day with easy archaeological walks.
• Day 5 – Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo & Train to Aguas Calientes: You continue cultural visits, then descend even further (2,040 m / 6,692 ft) as you reach Aguas Calientes.
• Day 6 – Machu Picchu Guided Tour: You explore the citadel at moderate elevation in relaxed conditions, with plenty of time for rest and photos.
• Day 7 – Return to Cusco & Light Exploration: You return by train and vehicle to Cusco, with optional light activity or free time to shop, eat, or rest.
• Day 8 – Adventure Hike (Rainbow Mountain / Humantay Lagoon / 7 Lakes of Ausangate): You are now well acclimatized for your high-altitude hike to above 4,000 m (13,000 ft).
• Day 9 –  Free Exploration in Cusco + Flight to Lima: Enjoy your final hours in Cusco with free time to shop, explore, or relax before your domestic flight to Lima. After landing, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for one last night in the capital.
